The first G-type Pressure Meter®. A unique model widely distributed from 1964, which the sounders called "the Mickey", because of its two ears. The body models will appear in the 70's. Pencil and charcoal drawing of the Ménard design office, on the cover of a commercial brochure Etudes Pressiométriques Louis Ménard S.A.

1951- Admission to the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. Teaching, among others, of Professor Jean KÉRISEL, who will be the 3rd President of the CFMS (1969 - 1973), and the 6th President of the SIMSG (1973 - 1977).

1954 - Civil Engineer of the Ponts et Chaussées. 1955 Master of Arts from Harvard University and M.I.T. (USA). Taught by Karl TERZAGHI, Arthur CASAGRANDE, Donald W. TAYLOR, professors and practitioners who are among the great founders of Geotechnics.

1958 - Entry as Technical Director "Les Pressiomètres Louis Ménard" where he is called by the financiers of Louis Ménard. 1958 - 1982 Various positions in the Menard Group, notably the companies Etudes Pressiométriques Louis Ménard and Techniques Louis Ménard. Until Louis Menard's death (January 1978), he was his main collaborator in the analysis and scientific development of the technologies developed by the Menard Group.

1982 - 1992 - Solétanche. Department Director. He founded a soil improvement unit of one of the world leaders in the field. He takes a progressively more active part in the board of the CFSMG (Commission pour la coopération et la Francophonie, Lettre de la Géotechnique). Since 1992, he has been Apagéo's Scientific Advisor, a role he has held since the creation of Apagéo (1984).

GEOTECHNICAL WRITING AND EDITING

SOILS (1962 - 1980)

Created by Louis Ménard in 1962 to disseminate his ideas, the bilingual journal Sols Soils, subtitled "International Review for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering" is published by "Les éditions Sols Soils", with two editors, Michel Ph. Gambin and Jean Rousseau. Mr. Gambin, who is perfectly bilingual in French and English, has provided most of the English translations of articles and abstracts, supervised the German and Spanish translations of abstracts for most of the articles, and participated in the editing of the "abstracts" of the Russian articles of the Soviet geotechnical journal. In each issue, a "News and Press Review" section, mostly written by M. Gambin, devotes several pages to the analysis of the content of international congresses and events concerning geotechnics and civil engineering, and of recently published books.

SOLS SOILS has published

- 35 issues between 1962 and 1980, representing about 70 papers and about 100 authors. Most of the founding articles of the Ménard pressuremeter method are in these publications, as well as the principles and first applications of Dynamic Ménard Consolidation.

- A special issue "Abstracts 1962-1968" in English. It gathers the abstracts of the main articles on the pressuremeter method. It contains the signatures of the Pressiometer® pioneers: L. MÉNARD, J. ROUSSEAU, A. VAN WAMBEKE, M. CASSAN, M. GAMBIN, J.-P. DAUVISIS, G. BOURDON, J.-F. JEZEQUEL, A. HOUY, G. GOULET, Y. HULO, A. PETER, P. LAMBERT.

TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION OF THE MENARD GROUP (1958 - 1982)

As soon as he joined Louis Ménard in 1958, Michel Gambin became the group's internal proofreader and editor of all technical documentation, which he organised in the form of a series of "D" notices for geotechnical documentation on pressuremeter methods, and "M" notices for the equipment manufactured by the Ménard group companies. Distributed to customers and dealers of the Pressiometer®, this technical documentation will contribute greatly to the spread of the Menard method, and to ensuring consistency between users.
The Menard "D" manuals will contain more than 100 titles() . To publish them, as well as the Menard Group's commercial notices, the offprints on the Pressure Meter and Dynamic Consolidation, Michel Gambin has set up a real internal "publishing" department managed by two specialists. The jewel in the crown of the collection is the Menard D60 General Notice "Rules for the use of pressuremeter techniques and the use of the results obtained for the calculation of foundations", published since 1965.

The English translation of the D-60 is published under the name of Louis MÉNARD, "The Interpretation of Pressuremeter Test Results", Sols Soils N°26, 1975, a synthesis for the use of readers in English of 20 years of practice by the inventor of the Pressuremeter. The D-60 Ménard has since been constantly re-edited, corrected and updated by M. Gambin. Published and distributed in French, English, Spanish, German, Polish and Swedish by the Menard group, it has also been translated locally into Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Hindi by users or national laboratories.

In 1998, Michel Gambin reissued it at Apagéo, thoroughly revised and updated, according to the developments of the pressuremeter method taken into account by fascicule 62 title V of the CCTG of the Ministry of Equipment (1993) and then by Eurocode 7.

"THE SIMSG GEOTECHNICAL NEWSLETTER

Initially launched as a partial translation of the "ISSMGE NEWSLETTER for the French-speaking members", during the presidency of Professor François Schlosser at the CFMS, it took off in December 1995 under the following presidency of Michel Londez.

Michel GAMBIN, the founder, will be the editor-in-chief from 1995 to September 2007, for 48 issues of 4 to 16 pages each, for which he spends a lot of time gathering information, summaries of international congresses, bibliographies, book reviews, biographical notes, etc.

At the same time, he also leads a Commission for Cooperation and Francophony in Geotechnics.

On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the first patent of Louis MÉNARD's Pressiomètre®, coordination was naturally established between the inventor's collaborator and the LCPC's geotechnical department. The bilingual French-English symposium brought together more than 200 participants of 34 nationalities at the ENPC in Marne-la-Vallée from 22 to 24 August 2005.

The two volumes of proceedings published by the Presses de l'Ecole Nationale des Ponts & Chaussées include 75 papers on pressure measurement, 30 national or transnational reports on the use of the pressure meter, the analysis of the comparative results of 12 participants in a prediction (Class A) of the bearing capacity and settlement of a pile, and the transcripts of the debates, as well as the major contributions of geotechnicians with a long-standing relationship with Louis Ménard and Michel Gambin:

COORDINATOR OF THE FRENCH CONTRIBUTIONS TO IFCEE'09

Invited by Professor P.W. MAYNE, chairman of TC16 "In situ testing" of the SIMSGE, to testify at the Orlando Congress in March 2009 on the maturity of pressuremeter techniques, Michel Gambin coordinated five French contributions on the design of deep foundations based on in situ tests, giving them a certain unity, particularly in terms of translation, notations and references to the Ménard pressuremeter.

Work to be published. He and his wife, Professor of Geography at the University, are completing a history of science book on the eponymous treatise of the 2nd century (AD) Greek astronomer and geographer, its Arabic and Latin manuscripts, and its reception in the Middle Ages in the Latin West. The book includes a comparative analysis of the Latin and Arabic manuscripts, a mathematical study of the representation of the celestial sphere on two discs in an outline of descriptive geometry and their relative motion providing an analogical representation of the observation of the sky at any latitude.
